Binh Dinh and PNE group meet to discuss implementation of the offshore wind power project

On October 22, 2024, at the Provincial People's Committee Office, Mr. Ho Quoc Dung, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee (PPC) Pham Anh Tuan met with Mr. Per Hornung Pedersen, Chairman and CEO of PNE group (Federal Republic of Germany) to discuss issues related to the offshore wind power project in Binh Dinh province. The meeting was also attended by the PPC Vice Chairman Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang and the leaders of relevant departments in the locality.

At the meeting Mr Ho Quoc Dung emphasized that with a coastline of 134 km, Binh Dinh province identifies marine economic development as an important driving force in the province's economic development. Accordingly, the province is planning and orienting the development of industrial parks, urban areas, trade, and tourism services onshore, and for offshore, the province also has proposed to the government a plan for energy development, including offshore wind power projects. Binh Dinh province is determined to become one of the leading localities in clean energy development.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Per Hornung Pedersen, Chairman and CEO of PNE group, thanked the provincial leaders for the warm welcome and appreciated the potential and advantages of the province, especially the determination and vision of the provincial leaders in planning and investing in infrastructure for socio-economic development. Mr. Per Hornung Pedersen stated that PNE group has developed an offshore wind power in 14 countries on 4 continents. For Asia, Viet Nam is the first destination and Binh Dinh province is the first province in Vietnam where the group has promoted the development of an offshore wind power project named Hon Trau - the name of an island in the province. The group has researched and developed this project since 2019. This is a dedicated, prioritized, and key project of the group and is believed to be a key project of Binh Dinh province. The cooperation between the two sides in the past time has initially brought about very good results.

The Chairman of PNE group emphasized that the offshore wind power project in Binh Dinh province has been strongly promoted at the Government level and has received support from the Government of Vietnam and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The group hopes that the project will soon be approved for investment to become one of the pilot projects for offshore wind power development in Vietnam and it shall be selected as a pilot project in the cooperation program between the German Government and the Vietnamese Government.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan shared with the leaders of PNE group information about the orientation and strategy to continue promoting the implementation of the offshore wind power project, and the capital arrangement plan when the project is approved. Mr. Per Hornung Pedersen said that PNE group had its own orientation and believed that the project development in Binh Dinh is a correct decision and hoped that the project would be implemented soon. The group will continue to carry out related work to ensure that the project will be carried out when the investment policy is approved.

Previously, PNE group registered to study and survey the investment in the Offshore Wind Power project in Binh Dinh province with a capacity of 2,000 MW divided into 3 phases, valued at USD 4.6 billion USD.

It is expected that after completing and putting into operation, the project will provide about 7.1 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid each year. Thereby, the annual revenue contribution to Binh Dinh province is estimated at about VND 1,600 billion.
