Within the first two months, foreign direct investment (FDI) reaches USD 5.328 billion, equivalent to 70% of the same period last year, said the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), attributing this to the new approval and capital supplementation of some projects. Out of 67 projects licensed over the past two months, the southern province of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu boasts for the three biggest ones, namely the Bình Châu Safari and Resort totally worth of USD 500 million, the Tóc Tiên New Urban Quarter (USD 600 million) and the Vietstar Mixed-User Complex (USD 200 million). At least ten projects have been pumped with the total additional capital of USD 3.815 billion, up 41% compared with the same period in 2008. Especially, the Sài Gòn Atlantis Hotel Complex, invested by the US-based Winvest Investment LLC, was readjusted from USD 300 million up to USD4.1 billion. Due to the global financial crisis and economic downturn, the FDI inflow is predicted to plummet this year. The MPI’s statistics show that the two-month FDI figures in Hà Nội and Hải Phòng just stand respectively at 7% and 27% against the same period.
