Seminar on trade promotion for sustainable fishery development in Central Coastal region

On 29th March 2014, a seminar on trade promotion forsustainable fishery developmentin the Central Coastal region was held in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province.

 

 

It was part of Vietnam Seafood Festival 2014in Phu Yen province.


Inthe opening talk, Dr Tran Du Lich, Head of the Collaboration and DevelopmentConsultation Team in the Central Coastal region asserted that the fisherysector has gained significant achievements, becoming a key economic sector andan important production area leading the international integration and playinga special role in socio-economic growth strategy in Vietnam in the recent years.

Up to 2013, total fisheryoutput achieved 6 tons nationwide, up almost 2,47 times compared with 2011, ofwhich catching output reached more than 2.7 million tons, rising more than 1.56times compared with 2001 and aqua-culture over 3.34 tons. Vietnamese seafoodproducts have entered more than 165 nations and territories all over the world.In addition, fishery sector has also created more than 4 million jobs andcontributed to protect sea and island sovereignty.

At the seminar, guestsraised opinions on solutions for sustainable fishery development in the Centralregion. Numerous solutions discussed included: trade promotion, upgrading thelogistic area, human resource training, building key products, supportingfishmen, incentives to attract investment in fishery catching … In addition, guestsalso recommended to build a fishery logistics centre in the central coastal region.

It is important a goodconnection is set up with Vietnamese commercial counsellors overseas so thatinformation of the regional seafood products can be sufficiently updated .Moreover, updated information on importing market of key seafood products of Vietnam and ofthe central coastal region on the websites of the Region and each locality isvery important.

It isnecessary to establish a fishery trade promotion fund on the basis of financialsupport of the trade promotion capital resource of the cities/provinces in theregion and donation of the seafood processing and exporting enterprises, and toestablish a seafood centre in the region – emphasized Mr Nguyen Ba Thanh.
