Mr. Kato - Chairman of Japan-Vietnam Friendship Associationin Sakai, Japanasserted that at the meeting with the delegation led by the Chairman Le Huu Locin Japanon June 13th, 2013.

Attending the meeting were representatives from many largefirms specializing in seafood sector such as Daiki Suisan Japan, NipponSuisan ...

The meeting focused on making the best plan to address how toassist a number of Japanese companies in importing seafood and tuna into Japan, to carryout the project of supporting poor fishermen in improving fishing techniques.

Located in the central region of Vietnam, Binh Dinh has favourablegeographical location as being close to the Spratly Islands and the ParacelIslands, fishing ground of diversified fish species with high economic value suchas tuna, including oceanic tuna with yellowfin tuna, big eye tuna and smalltuna, mainly skipjack tuna; tuna-like species/billfishes  such as mackerel, shark and squid species.

At present, Binh Dinh has 7,303 fishingboats including: 2,326  boats under20 CV, mainly fishing in coastal area and coastal lagoons; 2,365 boats from 20 to under 90 CV and 2,612 boats of 90 CVor more mainly fishing offshore.

In the   three central provinces of Vietnam (Binh Dinh, PhuYen, Khanh Hoa) with developed tuna industry, Binh Dinh is currently leading withtuna output (yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna) of almost 9,000 tons/year, smalltuna (mostly skipjack tuna) about 34,000 tons/year.

Despite the potentials and advantages of tuna fishing andfishing capacity, fishery sector of Binh Dinh is facing numerous difficultiesand challenges.

Fisheries of Vietnamin general and Binh Dinh in particular have small-scale and organized ineffectively. Means of fishing are mostly wooden hull boats, enginesand equipment are very basic. Themethods of fishing are traditional crafts and while fishing extensionactivities the application of advanced technologies in catching and storageafter harvest still have a lot of limitations, leading to decreased quality andvalue of fishery products.

Fisheries infrastructure, logistics suchas fishing ports, landing sites, shelteringplaces do not meet service and production requirements. Especially where storm shelters, fairway for boats andvessels are not  safe enough, which hasled to loss of property and lives of fishermen. In addition, this issue has an increasingtrend due to global climate change.

In order to help solve the above-mentioned problems, BinhDinh province has planned to seek ODA capital. In particular, two specific ODAprojects are designed, namely, ODA project of supporting fishmen in sustainableand effective catching of tuna resources and ODA project of upgrading the storm shelter area in Tam Quan Bac, HoaiNhon. These projects are also expected to improve effectiveness ofcatching, processing quality, trade of direct seafood exportand to enhance sustainable fishery.
