On the morning of 14th October 2013, at the Provincial People’s Committee Office, the Chairman Le Huu Loc, and representatives of the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Planning and Investment, Agriculture and Rural Development and Binh Dinh Seafood Joint Stock Company had a meeting with Japanese business delegation EL Shokai, Shouei, Dairei to discuss investment and cooperation in fishery sector in Binh Dinh province.
Binh Dinh has a coastline of 134 km and territorial waters of around 2,500km2 and more than 40,000 km2 of exclusive economic zone with various fishery resources and high economic values. The local rare specialties such as mackerels, tuna, shrimps, squids, swallow bird’s nest, lobsters, king crabs… are popular nationwide and overseas. The fishing fleet consists of over 7,772 motorized boats with a total capacity of nearly 698,687CV. 6,764 boats are fishing on sea, accounting for 87% of the total number of boats, with capacity achieving 555,801 CV.
Fishermen are being encouraged to build large boats and ships with high capacity for offshore fishing, especially fishing ocean tuna for export. The aim is to promote fishing tuna as a mainstay of offshore exploitation, a sustainable development towards modernization. The annual average fishing capacity is around 150,000 tons of seafood, of which tuna capacity is about 10,000 tons. However, due to limited quality of fishing and preserving techniques, the economic value of exported fish is low.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed fishing techniques, preservation and processing to enhance the value of tuna products. The Japanese firms expressed their wish to cooperate and invest in the sector in Binh Dinh Province in the near future.
On the same day, the delegation met with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to discuss fishing and processing tuna in the province; the team also met with Binh Dinh Seafood Joint Stock Company regarding possible cooperation.
